Did you say Backyard Chickens?

Did you say Backyard Chickens?

Now none of us are out to go against the grain of DC law when it comes to our backyards however if you happen to live just outside of the District, a little backyard chicken coop might be of interest to you this Spring season.

Actually a bit of side note here, I happened to be speaking with one of the organic egg producers at one of the DC Farmers Markets not too long ago and asked them about the possibility of one ordering “peeps” or pullets a hen less than a year old for a backyard set up and they indicated that it was no problem, they would be happy to deliver one, two or three.  So how does one get started? Well I came across a “short course” info meeting being held at the Howard County Conservancy on February 12th at their nature center.

Having tended to chickens as a kid back home in Pennsylvania there is a bit of work involved but nothing even comes close to the quality of a fresh egg, especially when it comes from your own backyard!

  1. Actually, chicken keeping is legal only in Montgomery County. Residents of all other neighboring jurisdictions are prohibited from keeping chickens, just like DC residents. There are active campaigns to legalize chickens in Alexandria and in Prince George’s Co.

Prince George’s residents can sign the petition at http://www.pghens.com.

Well I wish the jurisdictions around here would see the value in homeowners being able to raise some backyard hens and provide permits / inspections

I do not even know how I ended up here, but I thought this post was great. I do not know who you are but certainly you’re going to a famous blogger if you aren’t already ;) Cheers!
