This headline appears to be more common than you might like to see and it is happening across the country at a record pace as state budgets see some tightening. With nuclear energy in the spotlight due to the recent events in Japan our existing energy infrastructure and production is in some serious need of reevaluation. Not to make any less of the situation in Japan as it is difficult to say what the full scale effect will be on their population from the radiation leaks but we can be fairly certain that if it was a windfarm under water that we would be dealing with a slightly less catastrophic event. It is with the following memo that was sent out by the MDV-SEIA that place support behind this effort and contact our respective legislators encouraging them to evaluate the issues more thoroughly understanding the future risks if we decide to cut renewable energy budgets.
“Dear MDV-SEIA members and friends,
Funding for solar energy incentive programs at the Maryland Energy Administration (MEA) is at risk of being cut; calls and emails from the solar community in our region to Maryland legislators will go a long way towards restoring funding levels recommended by the Governor. These reductions were recommended by Maryland’s Department of Legislative Services (DLS) and, if adopted by the House and Senate Budget Committees, will result in ZERO funding for MEA’s residential and mid-size solar programs.
Will you take a moment out of your day today to make a few critical phone calls and/or send emails to key members of the House and Senate Budget Committees?
Ask your elected officials to rely on the Governor’s budget request for MEA efficiency and renewable energy programs, and let them know that adopting the DLS budget will zero out solar energy incentive programs important to our industry and could even mean layoffs of solar energy employees across the state!”
