Washington, D.C. Residents Celebrate Their Independence from Fossil Fuels

Making the break

Couple Takes Step toward Zero Carbon Footprint with Installation
of Largest Residential Solar Panel System in Washington, D.C.

WHAT: Great environmental and human interest story, complete with strong visual elements.

As the country witnesses first-hand the need for alternative energy sources, Shelley Cohen and Mike Gala are doing their part to become independent from fossil fuels by embracing a clean energy future that includes the installation of Washington, D.C.’s largest residential solar power system. Washington, D.C. and other East Coast jurisdictions are offering attractive incentives to those who make the transition from traditional energy consumers to clean energy producers. Ms. Cohen and Mr. Gala are aggressively pursuing their goal of achieving a zero carbon footprint through various residential upgrades, which previously earned their home a spot on Planet Green’s Renovation Nation.
Astrum Solar, headquartered in Howard County, Maryland, is installing the landmark system. The company serves customers throughout Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Ohio in addition to Washington, D.C.
WHEN: The installation of solar panels will take place Friday, July 9, 2010 between 9:30AM and 1:30PM.

Ms. Cohen and Mr. Gala will mark the milestone by hosting a ribbon-cutting for neighbors and guests from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM.
