The Beekeeping Class is Back

As an avid beekeeper myself here in DC with 3 beehives in my back yard, I know all too well about the benefits of urban beekeeping and the interesting conversations it can lead to.  Having studied in college and kept bees on and off over the years I have seen bees kept in some of the most interesting of locations from DC to around the world.  Honey bees ( Apis Melifera ) thrive in our inner cities because of the diversity of plants and flowers that abound in urban settings.  The suburbs tend to promote mono-cultures and so as one would expect diversity is the spice of life and the same is true for a bee.

DC Dept. of Parks and Rec. offers up this course once a year to introduce its residents the basics of beekeeping and why it is so important to our local environment.  If you have considered it in past but just weren’t sure about how to get started NOW is your chance!

DC Urban Beekeeping Workshop 2011

February 1st- March 1st Tuesdays:  6:30-8:00pm

Sherwood Recreation Center 641 G Street, NE

Learn all about the interesting life of honey bees, their importance as pollinators and be prepared to join the existing DC beekeeping community at one of our urban hives. Students will leave ready to tend and inspect the hives, and can look forward to learning the methods for constructing a hive, harvesting bee product, extracting honey, disease control, and preparing the hives for winter.

Pre- registration is required.

All interested registrant’s need to submit the preliminary course questionnaire.  Please go to: https://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?formkey=dENLLXJ6UHNlaFRzNlQ2cDZ4dkFPVEE6MQ

After all the questionnaires have been submitted and reviewed you will receive a notice of your admittance.  Due to the overwhelming popularity of this course, we are looking for truly committed and interested individuals to take the course.  Thank you for your time and interest in the wonders of urban beekeeping.
